Tips on choosing the right air conditioner

If you think that choosing an air conditioning unit is easy, then you are wrong. All air conditioning units operate differently, they have different function/way and also have different sizes. There are a few types of air conditioner in the Singapore market such as split unit type, multi split type, VRV system, ceiling cassette type, ceiling suspended type, ceiling ducted type, window unit type, ceiling concealed type, portable unit and windows casement type.

Please choose wisely with regards to choosing the right air conditioning for your home. Cooling capacity should not be your main reason for purchasing the air conditioner. In fact, the cooling capacity is not only determined by the total horse power but also by the following factors:

British Thermal Unit (BTU) and Room Size
In Singapore, installation of air conditioning system are necessary because of the tropical climate. A home without air conditioning system can be uncomfortable to live in. Room size or cooling zone are very important factors as well.
Step-by-Step Calculation of BTU is required with formula below:

Step 1: Ensure size of area to be covered

Assume that your room size is 140 sqf.

Step 2: BTU calculation with “GOLD” formula

65 (BTU/h) x size = BTU/h cooling capacity required
65 (BTU/h) x 140 = 9100 BTU/h

Step 3: Choose the right cooling capacity based on calculated BTU

We can then choose 9000 BTU which can be found in the market and be fixed in your home. For instance, as a rough guide, you need:
9000 BTU for study room, bedroom 2 and bedroom 3
12000 BTU for master bedroom
18000 BTU for living or dining room

Step 4: Other factors

You should take into consideration other factors such as windows, electrical appliances, number of occupants, house/room position. If the space is located directly to sunlight, it means that the space will be warmer and requires more BTU.

Step 5: Choose the right type/function of air conditioning system

In Singapore market, there are many functions like inverter type, smart type, starmex, slim type, 2/3/4/5 ticks performance, WIFI to control your air conditioners by using Android or iOS based smartphones, integrated home appliances control, easy clean type and so on.

Step 6: Design (personalized skin, colour)

Some air conditioners have features to enhance the overall aesthetic value of your space. Most wall fixture units have “personalized” theme skin. It will be perfect for you if you are looking for something pretty to be placed on the wall to beautify the room/area.
